Advocacy Activities

The Centre for Sustainable Development (CFSD) launched its journey on 21 November 1988 with the commitment of informing people and raising awareness about the environmental and developmental situation and to facilitate mobilisation of people for a better quality of life. CFSDís interest lies in understanding how resource degradation can aggravate social tensions and bring about the conditions in which poverty is likely to aggravate further. Over the years, CFSD has transformed itself into a platform for activating and mobilising concerned citizens across the country as environmental activists.

CFSD is front-runner in the areas of introducing sensitisation programme for media professionals on issues of environment and development and advocacy writing syndicate entitled DEVFEA-TURE, environmental impact studies of major development projects for mass consumption and contributing to policy change, conducting opinion polls following Gallup method, launching the first ever monthly newsletter, entitled Lokejan, on developmental issues, publishing Paribesh Shabdakosh, the first-ever and only lexicon of environmental words in Bangla, sensitising MPs representing different political parties on their role in climate change and sustainable develop-ment, sensitising students of secondary schools across the country about the impacts of climate change on Bangladesh and organising environmental activists across the country under Envi-ronment for All (EFA) for environmental conservation.

CFSD has contributed to formulation of policies for children, influenced government for allocating free time on television and radio for public service broadcasting. Actively participated in Educa-tion for All movement and was rewarded for motivating the media in taking the immunisation programme forward. The standard Bangla terminology for the word sustainable development has been developed by CFSD.

CFSD has a general body of members who elect a seven-member executive committee for overall management of the organisation. The executive committee monitors the activities and where necessary provides guidance. Besides the executive committee, a group of leading per-sonalities provide advisory services to CFSD.

CFSD is the member of IUCN - The world Conservation Union, Bangladesh Focal Point for Earth Charter Initiative and Member of the World Ocean Network.

Since inception CFSD has received assistance and support from Swiss Agency for Development and Co-operation (SDC), The British High Commission, Dhaka, National Committee of IUCN Netherlands, Sustainable Environmental Management Programme (SEMP), Ministry of Environment and Forest, Government of Bangladesh, The Norwegian Agency for Development (NORAD), Canadian International Development agency (CIDA), The Ford Foundation, The Panos Institute, London, World Council of Churches (WCC), UNICEF-Bangladesh, The Access Initiatives (TAI), Department of Environment (DoE), Ministry of Environmnet and Forest (MoEF)UNDP-GEF, Arannayk Foundation (AF) and a number of private individuals.
